Funding and scholarships

NSERC / SSHRC / CIHR Postgraduate Scholarships

Federal tri-council graduate scholarships worth $17,500–$50,000/year for master's and doctoral students. Open to international students at Canadian institutions in some cases. Highly competitive — strong undergraduate record is essential.

Eligibility: Canadian citizens and permanent residents primarily; some programs open to international students

OGS — Ontario Graduate Scholarship

Provincial award of $15,000/year for students at Ontario universities. Funded jointly by the province and the institution.

University-specific fellowships

Most research-intensive universities have their own fellowship and bursary programs. Value varies widely — $5,000 to $40,000. Check each university's graduate funding page.

Supervisor-funded research assistantships (RA)

In thesis-based programs, your supervisor may fund your tuition and living costs from their research grants. This is common but never guaranteed — it depends on supervisor funding and your research fit.
