Applications
Most Canadian universities use online application portals. Requirements, timelines, and processes vary by institution, program, and credential level. This guide covers the key stages.
Application timelines
Most undergraduate programs have a January or February deadline for September entry. Some competitive programs have earlier deadlines. Graduate programs vary widely — some have rolling admissions, others have a single November or December deadline for the following September.
Check the institution's official deadline, not general guidance
Deadlines differ by program and can change year to year. Always confirm the deadline on the institution's official admissions page for your specific program and intake year.
Required documents
- ✓Academic transcripts — Official transcripts from all previous institutions, often with certified translations if not in English or French.
- ✓Language proficiency — IELTS, TOEFL, Duolingo, or PTE Academic, depending on the institution. Minimum scores vary by program.
- ✓Personal statement or statement of intent — Required at most universities. Expectations range from a brief paragraph to a 500-word essay.
- ✓References — One to three academic or professional references, depending on program and level.
- ✓Portfolio or audition — Required for arts, architecture, and some design programs.
- ✓CV or résumé — Standard for graduate applications; sometimes requested for honours or co-op programs.
Written materials: coaching vs. ghostwriting
An education adviser may help you develop, structure, and improve your personal statement. Coaching — giving feedback on your draft, suggesting what to include or cut, improving clarity — is permitted. Ghostwriting — producing the statement for you, or substantially rewriting it so it no longer represents your own voice and experience — is a form of academic misrepresentation.
Vianorr Education does not allow ghostwriting services to be listed on the platform. If an adviser offers to write your statement for you, that is a disqualifying red flag.
After you apply
Conditional offers require you to meet specific academic results, language scores, or documentation requirements before enrolment is confirmed. Read conditions carefully — missing a condition can result in an offer being withdrawn.
Deferral requests (postponing entry by one intake) are considered case-by-case and are not guaranteed. Contact the admissions office directly if you need to defer.
